If you've read any of my last blog posts you may know that I have been suffering with migraines since the end of 2014 and I've been posting a few updates about the different medicines I've tried and my tips on how to avoid migraines if you suffer from them. Over the last year I've been through ups and downs with my migraines, I went through a stage where they were so frequent I wouldn't even have a week between them but there were also times where I would have a couple of months between each one. I currently haven't had a migraine in a really long time, so I thought I'd tell you what I've been doing differently and my top tips to combat their effects
The last tablet I talked about was called Migraleve and it was supposed to minimise the effect of the nausea when I had my migraines, this had the opposite effect on me and made my sickness worse and made the pain more severe. For these reasons I stopped taking this tablet.
The next tablet I tried was called Imigran, this tablet also did not work for me.
The tablet I am currently taking is a Beta-blocker (these are most commonly used to lower blood pressure but they have also been found to stop migraines) and it's called Propranolol. At first the tablet wasn't working very well but I was on an incredibly low dose, I've been on this tablet since October 2015 and I now take two tablets in the morning and two tablets at night. I am not suffering from any side effects and I've been migraine free for a long time now.
As well as taking Propranolol starting in October I stopped eating sugar, white flour and caffeine. This was a huge commitment! It was originally supposed to be for six weeks and I didn't have a migraine during this time but after the six weeks I had a migraine. I then continued this up until April. After this I did the diet on and off until June. I have only had two minor migraines since then!
After I stopped the diet I've been doing a few things to ensure I don't get any migraines such as:
- Making sure I get enough sleep
- Trying to avoid stress
- Eating a balanced diet
At my recent hospital appointment we decided that we would try bringing me off the Propranolol next year after I have finished my GCSEs.
